ZeroNorth Launches AI Agent Platform for Vessel Operations

Maritime decarbonization technology company ZeroNorth has introduced an AI-powered platform designed to automate routine vessel operations, with several major shipowners already using the system.

The platform, called Propel, deploys AI agents to handle repetitive manual tasks across voyage planning, vessel management, and fuel workflows. Commodities trader Cargill, shipping company CMB.Tech, and bulker operator Ultrabulk have received early access ahead of a broader rollout planned for later this year.

How the automation works

Propel operates as a layer on top of ZeroNorth's existing vessel management platform. The system generates voyage plans, manages communications with ship masters, incorporates their feedback, and updates plans accordingly while keeping vessel operators informed throughout the process.

The platform aims to reduce fuel consumption and free human operators from coordination tasks so they can focus on higher-value decision-making. ZeroNorth CEO Soren Andersen said the company wants to enable "operations that are more connected, continuous and precise, where technology takes on more of the coordination work."

ZeroNorth plans to release additional AI-powered agents for Propel on an ongoing basis, with development informed by testing alongside its client partners. The platform will ultimately span voyage, vessel, and fuel workflows, continuously monitoring operations and executing actions within operator-defined boundaries.

Industry response

James Lewis, vice president of global operations at Cargill Ocean Transportation, said the company is "proud to continue working with our long-standing partners at ZeroNorth to explore technologies that can modernise shipping, improve operational efficiency and help move the industry forward."

Oskar Fabricius, CFO at Ultrabulk, emphasized the importance of technology grounded in actual operations. "The potential for AI that can take action, not just surface insights, is significant," he said, noting Ultrabulk's partnership with ZeroNorth since the company's early days.

Andersen assumed the CEO role at ZeroNorth in January, succeeding Soren Meyer. He previously led Unimed Maritime Solutions and held leadership positions at software company StormGeo.
