Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn have successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of fully autonomous rail operations, achieving the industry's highest automation standard in recent testing.

The AutomatedTrain project, a collaboration between the intelligent transport company, Germany's national rail operator, and industry partners, validated Grade of Automation 4 technology by autonomously moving a Mireo train from a depot to a station to begin passenger service, according to details first reported by Mobile World Live.

Grade of Automation 4 represents the highest tier of self-driving capability in rail transport, equivalent to full autonomy without human intervention.

Technical architecture

The system integrates several advanced technologies to enable autonomous operation. At its core, digital signaling based on the European Train Control System uses mobile networks to transmit real-time operational data.

Automatic Train Operation technology works alongside intelligent vehicle control systems, with the Advanced Vital Vehicle Operation platform conducting pre-departure and in-operation safety checks. The train relies on high-precision positioning data and digital maps to navigate routes.

State-of-the-art sensor systems continuously monitor track conditions, enabling the train to detect obstacles and respond automatically without human input. During testing, trains received instructions, performed necessary system checks, and embarked on journeys while independently managing safety protocols.
