Saronic secures Korean production partner for autonomous vessel manufacturing

Saronic, an Austin-based autonomous vessel manufacturer, has chosen Samsung Heavy Industries as its production technology partner for a massive new shipyard in Brownsville, Texas. The announcement came one week after the company revealed plans for the $3.3 billion facility, which could become the largest shipyard in the United States.

The partnership pairs Saronic's vessel autonomy capabilities and growing U.S. Navy contracts with Samsung Heavy Industries' decades of shipbuilding experience. Samsung ranks as the second-largest among South Korea's Big Three shipbuilders and brings critical expertise in production automation and robotic welding technology.

Robotics and automation at the core

According to a joint statement, the partnership will focus on production infrastructure including robotics-based process automation at Saronic's facilities. The company has made clear its goal of maximizing yard automation to reduce costs and speed production timelines.

Korean shipbuilders have developed sophisticated robotic welding systems that are evolving beyond fixed production lines to portable units for mobile applications. Samsung Heavy Industries has tested multiple robotic welding technologies over the years, including a spider-shaped wall-climbing robot developed with KAIST. The company's affiliate Samsung Electronics holds a majority stake in Rainbow Robotics, further strengthening its automation credentials.

Broader U.S.-Korea shipbuilding push

The Saronic-Samsung partnership aligns with a broader Trump administration initiative to deepen U.S.-Korean cooperation in shipbuilding. Following trade negotiations that resulted in Seoul pledging $150 billion in U.S. shipbuilding investments, the two countries inaugurated the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center in Washington, D.C. on July 23. The center will coordinate South Korean investments in research, training, and supply chain development.

Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas framed the partnership as essential to rebuilding American maritime industrial capacity. He said the collaboration aims to accelerate U.S. shipbuilding reindustrialization, train the workforce, and deliver autonomy-capable vessels for government and commercial customers.

The Brownsville location offers substantial waterfront space, a large available workforce, and favorable logistics and infrastructure. The project is expected to provide significant economic benefits to one of Texas's most economically disadvantaged regions.
