Rockwell Automation has launched an API-enabled integration between its Plex Quality Management System and FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI, connecting AI-powered visual inspection directly to quality workflows in manufacturing environments.

The integration, now available, allows manufacturers to deploy AI-driven anomaly detection across both new and existing camera systems. According to Rockwell, the connection addresses a longstanding limitation: traditional visual inspection achieves only 80% effectiveness and often fails to retain inspection history. By routing VisionAI results through Plex QMS, manufacturers gain traceability, product serialization, and a persistent record of every inspection.

A separate AI agent within Plex Reporting and Analytics generates dashboards and surfaces operational insights through natural-language queries, enabling users to identify risks and predict issues without manual data analysis.

Devin Burke, group product manager at Rockwell Automation, framed the move as part of a broader industrial autonomy strategy. "With predictive intelligence, manufacturers can shift from scripted automation to adaptable autonomy as systems learn, adjust and collaborate across software, hardware and workers," Burke stated.

Market context and adoption timeline

Rockwell's "Scaling MES Across the Enterprise" report projects that 42% of manufacturing processes will become AI-supported within the next year. The company positions its Plex platform's API-first architecture as a foundation for interoperability, allowing manufacturers to layer AI capabilities onto existing systems without wholesale replacement.

Manu Ravichandran, senior product manager at Rockwell Automation, emphasized the importance of industrial data structure: "This foundation gives manufacturers the structure, context, and scalability needed to operationalize advanced analytics and AI across complex operations."

The integration supports Rockwell's broader portfolio of AI and machine learning tools, including cloud-based MES platforms, edge AI, and digital twins. The company employs approximately 26,000 people across more than 100 countries as of fiscal year-end 2025.
