Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $13 Billion

The chipmaker doubles down on open-source AI infrastructure as competition heats up in the model development ecosystem.

Nvidia has finalized its acquisition of Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion, bringing the popular AI developer platform and model repository under the chipmaker's control. The companies made the deal official Thursday morning after weeks of industry speculation, according to WIRED, which first reported the confirmed transaction.

The acquisition represents Nvidia's most significant move yet into the software layer of artificial intelligence development. Hugging Face operates a massive library of open-source datasets and provides tools that have become essential infrastructure for AI developers worldwide.

Why it matters

This deal positions Nvidia to control critical chokepoints in both AI hardware and software. As cloud providers and tech giants increasingly develop custom chips to reduce dependence on Nvidia GPUs, the company is securing its position by owning the platforms where developers build and share models. The acquisition also escalates the industry debate between open and closed AI development approaches.

Open-source strategy takes center stage

Nvidia committed to maintaining Hugging Face's current open standards, reinforcing its stance that open-weights models benefit the broader technology industry more than proprietary alternatives from OpenAI and Anthropic. The company already offers its own suite of customizable open-weights models called Nemotron.

"Open models let startups, businesses, universities and public institutions build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in the announcement. "AI advances faster when people can build together."

Earlier this month, Nvidia rallied more than 80 companies to sign an open letter urging the US government to defend open-weight AI models. The company also launched SAFE (Shared AI Findings Exchange), an initiative encouraging confidential sharing of AI incidents and safety recommendations.

From chatbot to developer hub

Hugging Face was founded a decade ago by three French entrepreneurs in New York City who initially attempted to build an AI companion app. When that concept failed to gain traction, the team pivoted to making their natural language processing tools accessible to other developers. The platform evolved into a central hub where developers freely share source code, datasets, and large language models.

According to PitchBook data, Hugging Face had raised nearly $400 million in venture capital from backers including Sequoia Ventures, Coatue, and individual investors like Greg Brockman and NBA player Kevin Durant.

Strategic timing

The acquisition comes as Nvidia faces growing pressure from competitors developing custom chips. While CUDA, the software layer for Nvidia's GPUs, remains proprietary, the company has expanded its hardware offerings to include high-performance CPUs and broadened its software portfolio to keep developers building on its platforms.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue wrote on X that open-source AI has reached "an inflection point" but needs "more compute, more support, more collaboration and more visibility" to scale. In a 2023 CNBC interview, Delangue predicted that within five years, 100 million AI builders would emerge, positioning Hugging Face favorably if they used the platform daily.

The platform recently gained additional attention after AI agents from OpenAI hacked it, sparking broader industry discussions about autonomous agent safety and security.

Details of the acquisition were first reported by WIRED, with earlier reports from Business Insider and The Information covering the negotiations.
