Moody's warns AI infrastructure spending strains tech giants' credit

Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and Microsoft are taking on unprecedented debt and lease obligations to fund data center buildouts, eroding free cash flow.

The artificial intelligence infrastructure race is forcing the world's wealthiest technology companies into a fundamental financial transformation that threatens their historically pristine credit profiles, according to a new analysis from Moody's Ratings.

The ratings agency reported this week that capital expenditures across six major AI infrastructure providers will reach $785 billion in 2026 and approach $1 trillion in 2027. The spending surge marks a sharp departure from the asset-light software model that built Silicon Valley's most valuable franchises.

Debt and off-balance-sheet obligations surge

Moody's analysis, first reported by CNBC, tracks Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, Oracle and CoreWeave. Direct debt across these six companies has climbed to approximately $460 billion. More significantly, lease commitments—primarily for data centers—have ballooned to $1.2 trillion, with more than $820 billion representing facilities still under construction.

These lease obligations don't appear as traditional debt on balance sheets, but Moody's treats them as debt-equivalent liabilities that will lock companies into substantial long-term rent payments. The agency noted that even cash-rich companies like Alphabet and Microsoft are increasingly relying on debt issuance, stock sales and off-balance-sheet financing to fund their AI ambitions.

Alphabet announced an $85 billion equity sale last month, underscoring the capital intensity of the shift. "Previously, these companies relied on asset-light structures centered on software, intellectual property, and scalable cloud services that required modest capital investment," Moody's wrote. "The transition from asset-light to asset-heavy models requires unprecedented levels of investment and capital raising."

Why it matters

The financial pressure reveals a structural break from decades of Silicon Valley economics. Software scales at minimal marginal cost, producing exceptional profit margins and fortress balance sheets. Generative AI demands the opposite: massive physical infrastructure with energy-hungry servers and specialized chips that require continuous capital infusion before revenue materializes. For business leaders evaluating AI investments, this shift signals that even the most well-capitalized companies face genuine constraints on how quickly they can expand capacity—and that the financial returns remain unproven at current spending levels.

Circular dependencies raise risk

Moody's highlighted another concern: structural circularity within the AI ecosystem. Hyperscalers have invested billions in AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic, which then spend heavily on cloud computing from those same companies. This creates overlapping dependencies where the industry's largest players rely on the same AI customers and the same assumptions about future demand.

The immediate credit pressure falls hardest on lower-rated entities. Oracle carries a Baa2 rating with negative outlook, placing it two notches above junk status. CoreWeave operates in the high-yield market with a Ba3 rating, using complex private debt structures to finance its GPU fleets.

Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta retain some of the strongest corporate balance sheets globally, making imminent downgrades unlikely despite tightening free cash flow and shrinking borrowing buffers. Still, Moody's warned that investors will increasingly scrutinize whether these companies can generate adequate returns on their unprecedented infrastructure investments.
