HD Hyundai Deploys AI Welding Robots at U.S. Navy Shipyard

HD Hyundai has begun deploying its proprietary welding automation technology at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding facility in Mississippi, marking a significant step in U.S. naval shipyard modernization. The system has been operational since July 2025, according to an announcement from HD Hyundai.

The deployment follows a memorandum of understanding signed at the Sea Air Space 2025 exhibition in Washington, where the two shipbuilders agreed to collaborate on productivity improvements and technology advancement for warship construction.

How the welding system works

The automated welding technology uses real-time recognition to identify work targets and conditions, then automatically adjusts welding positions during operation. Rather than eliminating jobs, the system transforms the role of human workers from hands-on welders to supervisors who oversee multiple robotic units simultaneously and intervene only when necessary.

The platform captures data throughout the welding process, storing it in real time for quality control analysis, process optimization, and work history tracking. HD Hyundai has already tested the system at its own facilities, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho shipyards in Korea.

"The partnership will strengthen further and expand, improving the efficiency of warship construction and delivering greater value to customers," said Joo Won-ho, president of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

HD Hyundai has been expanding its U.S. shipbuilding presence across multiple dimensions beyond technology transfer. In July, the company signed a contract with Siemens in the United States to implement a next-generation marine platform. Separately, HD Hyundai established a memorandum of understanding with Frazer Industries focused on shipyard modernization as part of broader efforts to revitalize American shipbuilding capabilities.
