South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has awarded a KRW2.106 billion ($1.57 million) contract to domestic artificial intelligence firm MaumAI to develop autonomous welding technology for shipbuilding operations. The agreement, signed September 11, extends through July 31, 2027, and represents the shipyard's third known collaboration in AI-powered welding automation.

The contract value, excluding VAT, equals 21.52% of MaumAI's projected 2025 consolidated revenue, marking a significant engagement for the AI developer. Payment is structured around five development milestones, with a 30% advance payment due within 30 days of contract execution. MaumAI will conduct all work domestically in South Korea.

MaumAI's physical-AI approach

MaumAI specializes in physical-AI systems that integrate machine perception, decision-making capabilities, and robot control. The company has identified shipbuilding welding robots as a key application area for its technology platform. However, the contract filing does not specify which robotic hardware, welding equipment, shipyard facilities, or vessel programs will be involved in the development work.
