GS E&C and Hoban Back Robocon's Rebar Automation Tech
Major Korean builders invest in robotics startup to combat labor shortages and cut construction costs through automated rebar processing.

Major builders double down on construction robotics
GS Engineering & Construction and Hoban Construction have acquired convertible bonds in Robocon, a construction automation company specializing in robotic rebar processing, according to details first reported by Chosun Biz. The investment signals intensifying competition among South Korea's largest builders to secure automation technology as labor shortages and rising costs pressure the industry.
The investment came through the PlanH-XPLOR Green Smart City Venture Investment Partnership, a joint fund established in 2024 by the corporate venture arms of both construction firms. The 38.5 billion won fund includes 15 billion won from the National Land and Transport sector parent fund, 11.5 billion won from GS E&C, 2 billion won from Hoban Construction, and 500 million won from XPLOR Investment.
Why it matters
Construction automation represents a strategic shift for an industry traditionally dependent on manual labor. As demographic trends tighten labor markets across developed economies, robotics solutions that can reduce headcount requirements by two-thirds while improving safety offer compelling returns. The competitive positioning among Korea's top builders suggests automation adoption will accelerate beyond pilot projects into mainstream deployment.
Robocon's automation footprint expands
Robocon, spun off from Daehan Networks in November 2020, develops specialized automation for rebar supply, cutting, bending, assembly, and transport. Its flagship ARON system can reduce workforce requirements at rebar processing plants from 30 workers to fewer than 10 when producing 3,000 tons of building frame materials, according to the company. The technology also cuts material waste during processing.
The startup's solutions have been deployed at international projects including Singapore's Tuas Port and work related to Taipei Airport in Taiwan, both constructed by Korean firms.
Samsung C&T set the pace
Samsung C&T established the competitive template in 2023 when it invested approximately 15 billion won in Robocon through Samsung Venture Investment. The builder secured majority board voting rights and consolidated Robocon as a subsidiary in the second half of that year.
An XPLOR Investment official indicated the latest investment reflects both strategic considerations around construction site productivity and digital transformation, as well as financial return potential. The official noted that multiple institutions have expressed interest in pre-IPO equity investment ahead of a potential listing, though no additional funding rounds have been finalized.
Automation targets hazardous, repetitive work
The construction industry's automation push focuses on tasks involving heavy materials and repetitive motions—work that poses safety risks and struggles to attract sufficient labor. Rebar handling fits both criteria, making it a logical entry point for robotic systems.
As GS E&C and Hoban join Samsung C&T in backing Robocon, the competitive race to deploy construction automation technology at scale is entering a new phase among Korea's major builders.
