General Robotics cuts industrial robot deployment from month to hours
Microsoft alumni startup uses AI platform to automate engineering work that previously required teams of specialists.
Automation breakthrough targets industrial robotics bottleneck
General Robotics, a Redmond, Washington startup founded by former Microsoft researchers, announced Wednesday that its AI platform can now reduce the time required to deploy industrial robots from approximately one month to as little as two hours.
The company's GRID platform uses what it calls "Auto Engineering" to handle tasks that previously required teams of specialized engineers. Each robot deployment and failure diagnosis feeds back into the system, accelerating subsequent installations across factory floors, warehouses, and other industrial environments.
"Before this moment, it would take us a team of experts to go and execute on behalf of our customers," said CEO and co-founder Ashish Kapoor. "Clearly non-scalable, clearly very expensive, and clearly will take a long time."

Industrial robot adoption has long been constrained not by hardware limitations but by the engineering expertise required to configure robots for specific tasks and environments. By automating this integration work, General Robotics addresses a fundamental scaling problem that has kept robotics deployments expensive and slow. Platform works across robot types
The GRID platform supports multiple robot configurations including industrial arms, humanoid robots, quadrupeds, wheeled robots, and drones. The company has approximately a dozen enterprise customers across manufacturing, logistics, energy, and defense sectors, with revenue in the millions of dollars.
One customer, HTX—the science and technology agency of Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs—has worked with General Robotics for about 18 months, according to Kapoor.
Microsoft roots and competitive landscape
Kapoor spent 17 years at Microsoft, most recently as general manager of its autonomous systems and robotics research group in Redmond, where he created the open-source drone simulator AirSim. Co-founders Sai Vemprala (CTO) and Shuhang Chen came from the same Microsoft team.
Founded in 2023 as Scaled Foundations, the company initially focused on aerial robotics and drones with five employees. It has since grown to approximately 50 employees, primarily engineers, and rebranded as General Robotics.
The startup has raised nearly $34 million, including an April funding round led by Construct Capital with participation from Khosla Ventures, Accenture Ventures, Nvidia, and Valo Ventures. PitchBook estimated that round at $25 million.
General Robotics operates in a crowded field. Physical Intelligence has raised more than $2 billion to build foundation models for robots. Nvidia, which invested in General Robotics and provides the Isaac Sim simulation software integrated into GRID, is developing its own robot models and deployment tools.
Kapoor argued that robot manufacturers excel at hardware but often lack expertise for specific deployment scenarios. "That last layer is missing," he said.
