Fairview Health Services leads U.S. adoption of advanced pharmacy automation

Fairview Health Services has become the first health system in the United States to implement the BD Vmax 160, a pharmacy automation robot designed for high-volume centralized operations handling specialty medications and refrigerated therapies. The deployment marks the U.S. market entry of technology already established across European pharmacy networks.

The Minnesota-based health system operates one of the nation's largest pharmacy networks, processing an average of 20,000 prescriptions weekly across 25 outpatient locations and mail-order services. BD, a global medical technology company, announced the deployment on September 14, 2026.

Addressing new pharmacy fulfillment challenges

The automation addresses a fundamental shift in pharmaceutical fulfillment. Many of today's fastest-growing medication categories—including GLP-1 drugs, biologics, and other specialty therapies—come in packaging that differs significantly from traditional vial-based prescriptions. These medications often require refrigeration and unit-of-use handling rather than bulk dispensing.

Simultaneously, health systems face mounting operational pressures. Retail pharmacy closures, workforce shortages, an aging population, and the expansion of pharmacy deserts are creating access barriers for patients who need consistent medication access.

The BD Vmax 160 introduces high-speed unit-of-use automation to centralized pharmacy environments, managing how boxed medications are stored, tracked, and prepared for fulfillment. The technology differs from traditional pharmacy robots optimized for vial-based dispensing.

Fairview's BD Vmax 160 deployment extends an existing relationship with BD and builds on the health system's investment in pharmacy automation, including the BD Parata Max 2 high-speed vial filling robot already in operation.

The implementation positions Fairview to expand medication access across Minnesota while managing fulfillment capacity for therapies that traditional pharmacy workflows weren't designed to handle at scale.
