The ReSKILLING project, an EU-funded initiative, is developing practical training programs and occupational profiles to prepare workers for automated mobility systems. The project addresses a critical gap: while technological innovation receives substantial attention, workforce readiness remains underexamined despite being essential for large-scale CCAM deployment.
Jobs evolving, not vanishing
Contrary to widespread concerns about wholesale job elimination, automation is transforming rather than simply erasing occupations. Professional drivers will increasingly supervise automated systems and manage exceptional situations rather than perform continuous manual operation. Maintenance technicians must now combine traditional mechanical skills with software diagnostics, sensor technology, and digital systems knowledge.
Logistics operators face similar evolution, relying more heavily on real-time data, predictive analytics, and automated decision-support tools to coordinate complex transport networks. Entirely new roles are emerging simultaneously: remote vehicle operations technicians, Mobility-as-a-Service platform managers, digital infrastructure monitors, AI specialists, and cybersecurity experts now represent essential positions that barely existed in the sector a few years ago.
The shift emphasizes competencies over job titles. Growing demand centers on AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure management, systems integration, and human-machine interaction. Equally critical are transversal skills including communication, adaptability, problem-solving, and collaboration—capabilities that remain vital in highly automated environments requiring interaction with complex systems and multidisciplinary teams.
Training infrastructure takes shape
The ReSKILLING project is creating modular training programs, occupational profiles, and business models designed to facilitate workforce adaptation across the mobility ecosystem. The initiative developed eight use cases reflecting key CCAM deployment contexts, structuring analysis of affected professions, emerging job profiles, skills requirements, and socio-economic impacts.
These use cases provide the analytical foundation for case studies that will test and refine workforce development solutions in concrete operational contexts. The approach connects strategic workforce foresight with practical evidence from real-life CCAM applications, ensuring recommendations remain relevant and actionable.
Vocational education and training (VET) plays a particularly crucial role. While discussion often focuses on highly qualified professionals, technicians, maintenance workers, customer-facing personnel, and operational staff form the operational backbone of transport systems and require equal access to training opportunities.
Why it matters
Workforce displacement from automation becomes likely only when workers lack early awareness and timely reskilling support. With appropriate training policies, automation can create new employment opportunities rather than eliminate jobs. The pace of technological change makes lifelong learning essential, with micro-credentials and modular programs offering flexibility that traditional education models cannot match.
