Danish Ropca Wins FDA Clearance for Autonomous Ultrasound Robot

Arthur and Diana system automates musculoskeletal imaging for arthritic joints, targeting U.S. rheumatology access gaps.

Danish medical technology company Ropca has secured FDA 510(k) clearance for its autonomous musculoskeletal ultrasound system, opening the door to U.S. commercialization after four years of European deployment.

The system comprises two integrated components: Arthur, a fully autonomous robotic scanner, and Diana, an AI-powered analysis platform. Together, they capture and interpret ultrasound images of finger, hand and wrist joints without direct clinician operation.

Arthur performs standardized scans of the small joints commonly affected by inflammatory arthritis. Diana then processes the ultrasound images and generates AI-assisted reports designed to support clinical decision-making by healthcare professionals.

Deployment history and scale

Ropca has sold the system in the European Union since 2022. According to the company, the technology has completed more than 5,400 scans covering 83,500 individual joints across six countries. Until now, Ropca's U.S. activities focused exclusively on research and clinical validation.

"FDA 510(k) clearance for Arthur & Diana is a defining moment for Ropca," CEO Johannes Schaeferhoff said in a statement. "For providers, it can help address capacity and consistency; for patients, it points toward faster access to specialist assessment."

Targeting rheumatology workforce shortages

Ropca positions the system as a response to structural gaps in U.S. rheumatology care. The American College of Rheumatology reports that nearly three-quarters of U.S. counties lack a practicing rheumatologist, even as approximately one in four Americans receives a rheumatic disease diagnosis.

Dr. Matthew Koster, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic, noted the technology's potential role in expanding imaging access. "Arthur brings something particularly valuable to rheumatology: the ability to obtain standardized, reproducible ultrasound assessments of joints autonomously and efficiently," Koster said.

He added that as demand for rheumatologic care outpaces specialist availability, technologies like Arthur could help rheumatologists deliver more consistent care to patients with inflammatory arthritis.

Autonomous imaging systems represent a shift from physician-operated diagnostics to AI-supervised workflows. For specialties facing workforce constraints, this model could redistribute clinical time away from routine scanning and toward interpretation and treatment planning. The FDA clearance also signals regulatory acceptance of fully autonomous robotic operation in diagnostic imaging, potentially establishing precedent for similar systems in other medical domains.
