China's Z.AI Confirms Ox Alpha Model Behind Viral AI Launch
The Beijing firm revealed it created the high-performance reasoning model that topped usage charts after a stealth weekend release.

Z.AI Claims Viral AI Model
China's Z.AI Co., also known as Zhipu, confirmed Wednesday that it created Ox Alpha, the artificial intelligence model that surged to the top of usage rankings after appearing anonymously over the weekend on AI marketplace OpenRouter.
The Beijing-based company told Bloomberg News that Ox Alpha represents a new iteration of its GLM series and announced plans to release the model's weights — the parameters that guide AI decision-making — making it available for developers to build upon.
Ox Alpha launched without attribution on OpenRouter and quickly became the marketplace's biggest release to date, more than doubling the usage of DeepSeek, according to Bloomberg. The model specializes in reasoning tasks for coding and agentic applications while processing text, image, and video inputs. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, described the stealth launch as "very impressive."
Why it matters
The anonymous release strategy — also used by Alibaba and Xiaomi this year — allows Chinese tech companies to test frontier AI products without the pressure of public scrutiny, giving them flexibility to experiment before committing corporate reputation. More significantly, Ox Alpha joins a wave of Chinese models this summer that match or exceed U.S. benchmarks at substantially lower costs, intensifying competition between the world's two largest economies in artificial intelligence development.
Free Access and Market Strategy
Z.AI is offering Ox Alpha at zero cost for one week, though the company has not disclosed pricing beyond that initial period. The model's name draws inspiration from "Niu Lai" ("Ox Comes"), a recently released Chinese film.
The launch comes shortly after Z.AI released GLM-5.3, its latest flagship model that the company claims rivals Anthropic's Fable 5 on certain benchmarks. Z.AI, which went public in January, plans to issue its first detailed earnings report Monday covering its initial six months as a listed company.
Rapid Chinese AI Development
The Ox Alpha release underscores the accelerating pace of Chinese AI product development. Multiple Chinese firms have introduced powerful models in recent months that demonstrate competitive performance against established U.S. alternatives while maintaining significantly lower operational costs.
By open-sourcing the model weights, Z.AI enables the broader developer community to build applications and services on top of Ox Alpha, potentially expanding its ecosystem rapidly. This approach mirrors strategies used by other AI companies seeking to establish their models as industry standards.
