Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar has formed a partnership with FieldAI, a startup specializing in physical artificial intelligence for robots, to advance autonomous capabilities across its construction equipment lineup.

The collaboration, announced in early September, aims to merge Caterpillar's construction industry expertise and operational data with FieldAI's robot foundation models. The goal is to enable builders to run machines autonomously across jobsites, with initial applications focused on safety, productivity and efficiency improvements.

Early applications target inspection and risk detection

The partnership will initially concentrate on autonomous inspections, creating digital twins of jobsites and facilities, and enhancing situational awareness to identify potential hazards earlier. These capabilities build on Caterpillar's broader innovation push, which included unveiling a line of intelligent machines—excavators, loaders and dozers—at this year's CES conference.

Caterpillar selected FieldAI specifically for its ability to deploy robots in complex industrial environments where conditions change rapidly. The startup's robot-agnostic autonomy and foundation models are designed to transform proprietary operational data into actionable insights, addressing a common barrier to robotics adoption in construction.

Bedrock Robotics, for example, has placed autonomous excavators with contractors including Zachry Construction and Sundt Construction.

The construction industry has historically been cautious about robotics, citing concerns about machines' ability to handle unpredictable site conditions and contractors' difficulty extracting value from proprietary data. FieldAI's technology is designed to overcome these limitations through flexible foundation models that can adapt to varying environments and turn raw data into operational improvements.
