Caterpillar has formed a collaboration with FieldAI to deploy physical AI and autonomous robotics across construction jobsites and manufacturing facilities, targeting industries grappling with labor shortages and productivity pressures.
The partnership combines Caterpillar's decades of operational data and engineering capabilities with FieldAI's robot foundation models, which are designed to function across different hardware platforms in unstructured industrial environments. The collaboration supports Caterpillar's "jobsite of the future" vision, which the company outlined earlier in 2026.

The company progressed through sensing and control development in the 1990s and 2000s, eventually achieving Level 4 autonomy—machines capable of independent operation.
Since deployment began, Caterpillar's autonomous mining fleet has moved over 11 billion tonnes of material and traveled more than 380 million kilometers.

Initial applications and technology stack

- Operational optimization through simulation and AI-driven analysis
The collaboration leverages NVIDIA accelerated computing and Omniverse technologies to create high-fidelity digital twins from operational data. Integrated LiDAR, radar, GPS, and high-resolution cameras provide continuously updated digital representations of jobsites.
FieldAI, which has raised over $400 million from investors including Bezos Expeditions, Khosla Ventures, and NVIDIA's NVentures, brings robot-agnostic autonomy software it describes as a universal "brain" for multiple robots and tasks. The company's Field Foundation Models combine data-driven AI with physics-based reasoning designed for deployment in unstructured environments.
"Caterpillar has shaped operations on jobsites and manufacturing facilities for over a century, and these are exactly the environments FieldAI excels in, with deployments spanning hundreds of sites worldwide," said Ali Agha, FieldAI's Founder and CEO.
The partnership extends Caterpillar's existing relationship with NVIDIA, which the company deepened around AI applications in mining earlier in 2026.
