Caterpillar Expands Autonomous Quarry Trucks to Two More Sites

Caterpillar is expanding autonomous hauling technology to two additional quarries operated by Luck Stone in Virginia, building on a pilot program that has moved more than 3.5 million tons of material without a single reported injury.

The equipment manufacturer will integrate its autonomous system across fleets of Cat 775 trucks at Luck Stone's Boscobel and Bealeton operations, according to details first reported by Automation Watch. The expansion follows a pilot deployment at Luck Stone's Bull Run Quarry that went live in November 2024.

Proven track record in quarry conditions

Caterpillar's autonomous trucks have collectively hauled more than 13 billion tons and traveled over 455 million kilometers across all deployments without reported injuries. The Bull Run pilot provided the company with operational data specific to quarry environments, which differ from the mining operations where autonomous haulage has been more widely adopted.

Luck Stone, the largest family-owned crushed stone, sand, and gravel producer in the United States, operates more than 75 product lines across various grades and sizes. The company is a division of Luck Companies.

Beyond the autonomous trucks themselves, Caterpillar will deploy complementary technologies for loaders and other site equipment, creating what the company describes as a broader technology ecosystem across the operations.
