Automated Yard Checks Replace Four-Hour Manual Counts
A 6,000-container yard traditionally requires four hours of manual inspection by workers with clipboards, achieving roughly 75% accuracy. Aviro360, a technology company spun out of intermodal operator ConGlobal, claims its automated system covers the same ground in under an hour at 99% accuracy.
The company went to market as a standalone brand in October 2025 and is now live at more than 80 sites nationally, with 120 sites booked by year-end. Ilhan Kolko, president and managing director, projects the company will reach 200 sites by 2027, according to details first reported by FreightWaves.
Why It Matters
Yard operations sit between modernized warehouses and digitized transportation networks, yet most still rely on periodic manual checks that feed stale data into expensive yard management systems. That latency cascades into missed moves, lost assets, and detention costs—trucking firms paid $3.6 billion in direct detention expenses in 2023, with $11.5 billion in lost productivity, according to the American Transportation Research Institute. Aviro360 estimates its system returns more than $650,000 per year per site by eliminating the data lag that breaks downstream decisions.
Computer Vision Tracks Assets From Gate to Door
Aviro360 captures chassis numbers, container IDs, license plates, and logos at entry and exit gates, then tracks each asset through the yard on a unified timeline. The system records which door a trailer hits, which parking spot it occupies, and when each move occurs. Mobile inventory units mount to existing yard vehicles and require no ground markings or visible door numbers to function.
Gate hardware installs in two to three days on prepared sites, with a soft launch by day five. A four-week calibration period follows as machine learning models map the property. Accuracy reaches 99% at the end of that window, Kolko said.
Reefer Segment Sees Immediate Payoff
The technology integrates with trailer telematics to flag refrigerated units aging past safe thresholds before loads spoil. Refrigerated drivers face detention on 56.2% of stops—the highest rate in trucking—making real-time visibility particularly valuable for food and beverage customers, who represent recent wins for the company.
Drivers were detained on 39.3% of all stops in 2023. Fleets bill for those events 94.5% of the time but collect on fewer than half the invoices, underscoring the financial friction yard inefficiency creates.
Hardware Footprint Shrinks as Technology Matures
Aviro360 reduced its gate footprint by 40% over the past 18 months, requiring fewer cameras, poles, and ground infrastructure. The company reuses existing cameras that meet performance standards and integrates with security hardware customers already own, including gate arms and chain-link systems.
The concept has been in development for more than a decade, with both core products now in their third generation. What changed is cost: yard-grade computer vision once required million-dollar custom builds reserved for marine terminals. Productization has brought the technology within reach of ordinary distribution centers.
Kolko expects gate automation and inventory reconciliation to become standard within five years, driven by competitive pressure as early adopters demonstrate returns. The company originated inside ConGlobal, which has operated intermodal terminals and depots for more than 50 years.
