Archer Aviation to Acquire Boeing's Wisk, Insitu, SkyGrid Units

Archer Aviation has signed definitive agreements to acquire three Boeing subsidiaries—Wisk Aero, SkyGrid, and Insitu—in a transaction that merges autonomous flight systems, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, and unmanned aircraft capabilities under one roof. Boeing will take an equity stake in Archer and maintain access to core autonomy technology through an ongoing collaboration agreement, according to details first reported by Boeing.

The acquisition brings Insitu's profitable defense business, which generates over $200 million in annual revenue and operates across 35 countries, into Archer's portfolio. Combined, the three subsidiaries have logged nearly two million flight hours developing autonomous aviation systems.

What Archer is acquiring

Wisk has designed, built, and flown six generations of eVTOL aircraft over 16 years, completing more than 1,700 flight tests. The company has developed autonomy capabilities built on a next-generation flight-control computer, sensor suite, and radar system designed for certification in both civil and defense markets.

SkyGrid provides aircraft-agnostic air traffic management software that enables automated airspace coordination—infrastructure necessary for scaling commercial autonomous flight operations.

Insitu manufactures unmanned aircraft systems used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The company has produced more than 3,500 UAS platforms and maintains operations and support networks globally, with offices in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

Technology sharing arrangement

Boeing will retain access to Wisk's core autonomous flight technology for use in current and future commercial and defense aircraft through the collaboration agreement. Brian Yutko, Boeing's vice president of Commercial Airplanes Product Development, said the structure allows the acquired companies to accelerate development while Boeing capitalizes on two decades of investment in these technologies.

Why it matters

The transaction signals a strategic shift for both companies. Archer gains immediate defense revenue and decades of autonomy development work that complements its ZEE AI foundation model for aerospace. Boeing consolidates focus on core commercial and defense aircraft programs while maintaining technology access and upside through its Archer stake. The deal creates one of the most comprehensive autonomous aviation platforms in the industry, spanning air taxi operations, military UAS, and airspace management software—capabilities that have historically resided in separate companies.

Transaction timeline

The deal requires Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust clearance and other closing conditions. Both companies expect to complete the transaction by the end of 2026.

Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein characterized the acquisition as "a watershed moment" for the company's evolution into a diversified platform with expanded revenue streams.

Moelis & Company and Fenwick & West are advising Archer. J.P. Morgan Securities and Mayer Brown are advising Boeing.
