Apple Integrates Google Gemini AI Into Siri at WWDC 2026

Apple unveiled its partnership with Google to power Apple Intelligence features across its ecosystem at the company's Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday, marking a significant shift in how the iPhone maker approaches artificial intelligence.

The collaboration integrates Google's Gemini AI models with Apple's own technology to enhance conversational abilities and contextual awareness across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. Software chief Craig Federighi centered the presentation on platform improvements, trust and safety updates, and what he called a "big leap forward" in Apple Intelligence and Siri.

The event also served as outgoing CEO Tim Cook's final WWDC keynote, where he signed off saying, "I still believe the best is yet ahead."

Siri Gets a Dedicated App

The centerpiece announcement was Siri AI, a new dedicated application for iOS that functions more like competing chatbot apps from OpenAI and Anthropic. The assistant now maintains conversation history, understands follow-up questions without requiring context repetition, and integrates with multiple services to draft messages, organize photos, book events, and manage calendars.

On iPhone, Siri appears in the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen as an animated blob. The assistant also gained computer vision capabilities through the Camera app, allowing users to point their device at objects for identification and web results—functionality similar to Google Lens on Pixel phones.

Apple emphasized that much of the AI processing happens on-device for privacy reasons, though cloud requests are sent securely when needed. The features will not launch in the European Union or China initially while Apple addresses regulatory requirements.

iOS 27 Prioritizes Speed

Apple's next mobile operating system will support devices back to the iPhone 11, maintaining the same compatibility range as last year's release. The company claims apps now load 30 percent faster through preloading key data, photos appear 70 percent quicker, and AirDrop transfers see an 80 percent speed improvement.

New features include a perimenopause dashboard in Apple Health and the ability to share photo albums with Android and Windows users at full resolution. Safari gained AI-powered tab organization that automatically groups related pages into topical folders.

Child Safety Controls Expanded

Apple devoted substantial presentation time to parental controls, introducing time-of-day access restrictions for specific apps and contact limitations. A new Safari feature requires kids to request permission to visit particular websites, sending alerts to parents for approval. The system also automatically blurs images containing nudity and flags violent content.

The macOS update, named Golden Gate, will only support Macs with Apple's custom silicon chips, ending compatibility with Intel-based machines. Vision Pro received minor updates including Siri integration that appears as a floating orb.
