Alpha Chicago launches AI-driven private school at $55K tuition

A private school network that replaces traditional classroom instruction with AI-powered adaptive software has opened its first Illinois campus in downtown Chicago, charging families $55,000 per year for what it describes as a reimagined educational model.

Alpha Chicago began classes on September 8, 2026, at 350 E. South Water St., serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is operated by Alpha School, a private network founded in Austin, Texas, in 2014 that now runs campuses across multiple states and Puerto Rico.

The '2 Hour Learning' model

The school's approach centers on what it calls "2 Hour Learning." Students spend approximately two hours daily completing core academic work through personalized, mastery-based software. The remaining school hours are dedicated to public speaking, leadership development, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, team projects, physical activity, and creative problem-solving.

While the school has been characterized as "teacher-free," students are not left unsupervised with computers. Human employees called "guides" work with students throughout the day, monitoring progress, providing motivation, supporting emotional development, and coaching on leadership and goal-setting. These guides do not deliver traditional lectures.

The adaptive software allows students to work at their own pace, spending additional time on concepts they haven't mastered and advancing more quickly through material they already understand. Alpha School claims on its website that its classes rank in the top 1% nationally, though outside education researchers have questioned the amount of independent evidence supporting the company's broader academic claims.
