At least 80 current and former professors now work at Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and DeepMind—a figure that likely undercounts the true scale of the migration, according to reporting by The Atlantic.

The trend has become so pronounced that "'I'm joining Anthropic' is the new meme right now," Subbarao Kambhampati, a computer-science professor at Arizona State University, told The Atlantic. This month alone, Anthropic hired the chair of UC Berkeley's electrical engineering and computer science department, along with a Stanford economist, a theoretical physicist from the University of Maryland, and an analytic philosopher from UT Austin.

This talent drain represents a fundamental shift in where cutting-edge AI research happens. Universities traditionally incubated breakthrough research while training the next generation of scientists. As top faculty decamp for industry, academic institutions lose both research capacity and institutional knowledge. The migration also raises questions about research independence—corporate labs operate under commercial imperatives that differ sharply from academic freedom.

Beyond computer scientists

While computer scientists make up the majority of academic hires, AI companies are casting a wider net. OpenAI employs mathematicians and physicists specializing in black holes and string theory. DeepMind and Anthropic have both built teams of philosophers. Anthropic's recent job postings signal interest in legal scholars and political scientists.

At least three computer-science professors joined Meta's AI lab in late June alone. The pattern suggests AI companies view themselves as multidisciplinary research institutions rather than pure engineering shops.

The real numbers are higher

The 80-professor count represents only what can be identified through public information across four companies. It excludes professors who maintain part-time university appointments while working in industry, those at smaller AI startups, academics who founded their own companies, and faculty consulting informally with AI firms.

The Atlantic notes the figure is "likely a significant undercount" without access to internal company data.

Academic institutions feel the squeeze

Universities face structural disadvantages in retaining top AI talent. Industry salaries dwarf academic compensation, companies offer access to massive computational resources, and corporate labs can move faster without academic bureaucracy.
