Steven Cochrane, vice president of data and AI at automotive connectivity software supplier Cubic3, told WardsAuto that AI agents will fundamentally change how drivers and passengers interact with vehicles. The technology promises to transform cars into productive third spaces where occupants can accomplish tasks through natural conversation rather than manual interface navigation.

With autonomous driving still in early stages, voice remains the primary interface for AI agents. Cochrane emphasized that voice interactions must be exceptionally clean and simple, enabling conversational requests rather than menu navigation.
Consumers increasingly expect the same AI capabilities in their vehicles that they use at home. Microsoft's investment in in-car productivity suites exemplifies this trend, aiming to create mobile office environments. Beyond work tasks, AI agents can handle personal requests like ordering flowers or booking restaurants—completing actions rather than simply providing lists of options.
ABI Research estimates that AI-driven cabin occupation will grow from 5 million vehicles today to 70 million by 2035, according to Cochrane. The challenge for automakers is ensuring the technology meets these rising expectations without disappointing users or causing them to revert to their smartphones.
The dependency problem
The more significant challenge involves control and reliability. Automakers currently maintain complete authority over the cockpit environment, but AI agents require connections to external digital ecosystems that operate beyond OEM boundaries.
"You've broken out beyond your controllable environment," Cochrane explained. "You're now dependent on the connectivity quality, the latency and speed of your connection, which then makes you dependent on the mobile network operator and dependent, ultimately, on where that cloud service is residing."
This creates fragmented distribution architecture with multiple potential failure points. A robust mobile network connection becomes essential, particularly in regions like Europe where vehicles cross national borders regularly. Seamless roaming and consistent service quality require strong partnerships between automakers, network operators, and cloud providers.
Standards and partnerships as solutions
Cochrane believes industry standards backed by collaborative partnerships offer the only viable path forward. No single company can own the entire ecosystem spanning vehicle hardware, network infrastructure, and cloud services.
"Standards generate openness, which then accelerates innovation," he said, while acknowledging that achieving this coordination remains very difficult.
