New CIEL HR data shows enterprises racing to fill specialized AI roles as routine tech work shifts to automation.

Explosive growth in specialized AI roles
Demand for agentic AI engineers in India climbed 260 percent in 2026 compared to the previous year, representing the steepest increase among emerging technology positions, according to new workforce data from HR solutions provider CIEL HR.
The surge reflects a broader shift as enterprises move beyond AI experimentation toward production deployment. GenAI solutions architects and AI product owners each saw 120 percent growth in demand, while LLM engineers and MLOps engineers recorded increases of 86.5 percent and 82.2 percent respectively.
These specialized roles are becoming critical as organizations need talent capable of building, deploying, managing and governing AI systems in real business environments rather than simply running pilots.

The dramatic hiring shift signals that AI has crossed from proof-of-concept into operational reality for Indian enterprises. Companies now need specialists who can architect production systems, not just data scientists running experiments. This creates both opportunity and urgency for technology professionals to acquire skills in AI governance, integration and deployment—capabilities that can't easily be automated away.
Automation reshapes routine technology work
The hiring surge for AI specialists coincides with AI systems taking over substantial portions of routine technology workloads. According to the CIEL HR analysis, AI can now handle up to 70 percent of ticket resolution and report generation tasks, and 65 percent of test case creation work.
Support functions, reporting and manual quality assurance show the highest potential for task-level automation, though human involvement remains necessary for the remaining workload.
"AI is changing the value attached to different technology skills," said Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD and CEO of CIEL HR. "We are seeing routine activities become increasingly automated, while demand is growing for people who can build, integrate and govern AI in real business environments."
Reskilling becomes strategic priority
The shifting skill landscape is pushing organizations to strengthen internal talent development rather than rely solely on external hiring. Market-level skill gaps across AI, cloud and cybersecurity range between 38 percent and 61 percent, making internal capability building essential.
IT services firms are responding with AI-focused training programs, cloud academies, hyperscaler certifications and structured early-career initiatives. Critically, existing employees in delivery, infrastructure, support and engineering roles are increasingly being brought into these reskilling programs.
"The workforce transition is not going to happen through hiring alone," said Arjun Gupta, founder and CEO of Courseplay. "Organisations will need to look at how existing talent can move into emerging skill areas as the nature of technology work changes."
Key capability areas for reskilling include generative AI engineering, AI/ML, cloud engineering, cloud transformation, cybersecurity, data engineering and automation.
The findings come from CIEL HR's analysis of over 450 million job postings, 30 million professional profiles and 10,000 skills, using data from March 2024 to May 2026 along with projections based on current hiring and AI adoption trends.
