Brown said expanded beam optical connectivity will generate $40 million to $50 million this year, but the company projects revenue could reach four to five times that level—up to $200 million or more—over the next several years as the shift from copper to fiber accelerates.

Aggressive capacity expansion planned

During the company's earnings call, Brown estimated the total addressable market for expanded beam optical technology at roughly $1 billion currently, potentially growing to $2 billion by 2028. To capture that opportunity, 3M plans to double production capacity this year and double it again over the following 12 to 18 months. Even with that expansion, the company expects to rely on contract manufacturers and a broader supplier ecosystem to keep pace with demand.
