Zalando Invests in Sereact's $116M Round for Warehouse AI

Europe's largest fashion platform backs Stuttgart-based robotics firm to automate returns handling and fulfillment operations.

Sereact, a Stuttgart-based developer of physical AI for warehouse automation, has added Zalando as a strategic investor in its Series B round, bringing total funding to $116 million. The e-commerce giant's participation pushes Sereact's lifetime capital raised past $145 million.

The Series B was originally led by Headline in April 2026, with backing from Bullhound Capital, Daphni, Felix Capital, and returning investors including Air Street Capital, Creandum, and Point Nine. Zalando's decision to join reflects a direct operational need: the Berlin-based fashion platform processes returns on roughly 50 percent of items ordered, a labor-intensive challenge that grows more acute as Europe's workforce shrinks.

Why it matters

Warehouse robotics has long struggled to move from pilot programs to commercial scale. Sereact's traction—more than 200 systems deployed and over one billion production picks completed—signals that physical AI is finally delivering measurable ROI. For logistics operators facing chronic labor shortages and rising wage pressure, automation is shifting from optional to essential. Zalando's investment validates that thesis and positions Sereact's dual-arm returns technology as a solution for one of e-commerce's most stubborn cost centers.

From picking to returns handling

Founded in 2021, Sereact builds Cortex, an AI operating system that powers single-arm picking cells, dual-arm returns stations, humanoid robots, and a 3D perception system called Sereact Lens. Customers include Daimler Truck, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ikea, and Austrian Post.

CEO Andreas Gulde told tech.eu that the company deliberately started with a narrow use case—single-arm warehouse picking—to accumulate real-world training data. That data flywheel enabled Sereact to expand into more complex tasks, including a dual-arm system that unpacks returned items, inspects them, folds garments, and processes them for resale. Gulde said Sereact is currently the only company offering that level of automation.

For Zalando, which operates across 29 European markets and connects 62 million active customers with more than 7,000 brands, the operational fit is clear. Germany has one of the highest fashion return rates globally, and European regulations prohibit retailers from simply destroying returned goods. Sereact's robots offer a 30 percent cost advantage over manual processing, according to Gulde, and the company guarantees pricing based on per-return cost.

Planning, not just reacting

Sereact is preparing to launch Cortex 2.0, which shifts from reactive "try-and-see" behavior to a "plan-and-try" approach. The system uses a learned world model to simulate multiple action sequences, predict outcomes, and select the safest, most efficient path before the robot moves. Gulde compared it to a human deciding not to place a heavy bottle on top of fragile eggs.

The company opened its first U.S. office in Boston in June and plans aggressive North American expansion. Longer term, Sereact aims to build a general robotics brain capable of handling contact-rich tasks like assembly, though Gulde acknowledged current models aren't ready for that leap.

On humanoid robots, Gulde struck a cautious note. He pointed to safety concerns, regulatory uncertainty in Europe around CE marking for legged systems, and the technical fragility of walking robots. Industrial customers, he said, prioritize reliability and ROI over form factor.

Masood Choudhry, SVP of Fulfillment at Zalando, said the investment "underscores Zalando's commitment to supporting European technology companies, driving industry innovation, and shaping the standards of modern e-commerce."

Details of the funding and Zalando's participation were first reported by tech.eu.
