Companies operating automated distribution centers are fundamentally rethinking their approach to cybersecurity. Rather than treating it as a compliance checkbox or IT department concern, organizations now view cyber resilience—the ability to maintain and quickly restore operations after an incident—as central to business continuity.

This evolution reflects the growing role of software in warehouse operations. Modern Warehouse Control Systems coordinate material flows, inventory movements, and automation equipment across facilities. When these systems orchestrate the entire operation, their availability becomes as critical as their performance.

"The WCS has effectively become the operational backbone of the distribution centre," says Juho Nässi, Product Manager for Services at Cimcorp, a warehouse automation provider. "When software orchestrates the entire material flow, resilience becomes just as important as performance."

Why it matters

For food and grocery distributors especially, cyber incidents can cascade beyond facility walls. Disruptions don't just halt internal operations—they create product waste, break supply chains, and affect store shelf availability. Large grocery companies often form part of critical national infrastructure, amplifying the stakes. As automation deepens, the business case for resilience planning strengthens alongside the technical imperative.

Recovery planning takes center stage

Customer conversations have shifted accordingly. Where discussions once centered on system uptime and throughput metrics, buyers now probe disaster recovery capabilities, backup strategies, system monitoring approaches, and lifecycle management practices before committing to automation investments.

"Customer expectations have changed significantly in recent years," notes Antti Olenius, Team Lead for System Management at Cimcorp. "Today, companies are looking beyond traditional system performance and availability. They want to understand how operations can continue and recover if a cyber incident occurs."

This emphasis on recovery reflects operational reality. If critical systems become unavailable, automated distribution centers can slow dramatically or stop entirely. The consequences extend through the supply chain, particularly in perishable goods distribution where delays translate directly to waste and revenue loss.

Building resilience from design forward

Organizations are increasingly embedding cyber resilience into automation projects from the outset rather than retrofitting protections later. This approach incorporates secure system architecture, network segmentation, continuous monitoring, and tested recovery procedures as foundational elements.

"Cyber resilience is strongest when security is designed into the solution from day one," Nässi explains. "Organisations that invest in proactive monitoring, maintenance and recovery capabilities are better prepared to minimise disruptions and maintain performance when unexpected situations occur."

Looking ahead, Cimcorp anticipates cybersecurity requirements will intensify as automation platforms become more connected and adopt cloud-enabled architectures. The competitive landscape may shift accordingly.

"In the future, distribution centres will not only compete on throughput and efficiency," Olenius concludes. "They will also compete on resilience and their ability to keep goods moving when disruptions occur."
