Verizon secures major AI infrastructure contract

Verizon Communications has signed a dark fiber agreement with Google valued at more than $1 billion, marking the telecom carrier's entry into providing connectivity for AI data center infrastructure. CEO Dan Schulman announced the deal during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Friday, describing it as the beginning of a broader strategic push.

Under the agreement, Verizon will supply dark fiber—unused optical fiber infrastructure—to link Google's data centers. The announcement sent Verizon shares up more than 3% in Friday's opening trade, while Alphabet's Class A stock rose approximately 1%.

The CEO characterized these anticipated deals as stable, long-term arrangements with technically demanding infrastructure customers.

Schulman used the term "consequential" to describe the announcement, framing it as an indicator of where Verizon's revenue trajectory is headed. He positioned the AI infrastructure buildout as "one of the largest capital cycles of our lifetime" and emphasized that Verizon is "uniquely positioned to participate in it."

Leveraging legacy infrastructure for new demand

The company plans to tap its existing long-haul and metro fiber assets to meet hyperscaler demand. Schulman noted that while this network was constructed for a different technological era, it now aligns precisely with requirements for connecting AI data centers, compute clusters, and distributed infrastructure across regions.

The strategic pivot allows Verizon to monetize infrastructure that might otherwise face declining returns from traditional telecom services, while positioning the company as a critical enabler of AI development at scale.
