University of Phoenix Partners with OpenAI on AI Skills Training

The collaboration will integrate ChatGPT Edu across teaching, student services, and workforce development for working adult learners.

University of Phoenix has formed a partnership with OpenAI to embed artificial intelligence capabilities throughout its educational programs, targeting working adults who need to develop AI skills while maintaining their careers.

The collaboration, announced in July 2026, will deploy ChatGPT Edu across the university's teaching, student support systems, career services, and institutional operations. The initiative aims to help students—who average 38 years old and are already employed—build practical AI competencies they can immediately apply in their workplaces.

Why it matters

Unlike traditional college students preparing to enter the workforce, University of Phoenix serves professionals already employed and balancing careers with education. This creates a unique testing ground for AI-enabled learning: the institution can observe how working adults apply new AI skills in real-world job settings and measure the impact on career advancement. The insights could inform how other universities and employers approach workforce development in an AI-driven economy.

Building on existing AI infrastructure

The partnership extends work University of Phoenix has already undertaken to integrate AI across its operations. The institution has embedded AI competencies into more than 20 degree programs and provides students access to Microsoft Copilot and an AI-powered academic support system called PASS.

The university also operates Phoebe, an AI assistant that provides daily support to thousands of learners, and maintains a Center for AI Resources focused on responsible AI use. Faculty have completed institution-wide AI training, and students engage in scenario-driven AI experiences designed to simulate workplace applications.

"Our students aren't preparing for tomorrow's workforce—they're already shaping today's," said Chris Lynne, CEO of Phoenix Education Partners and president of University of Phoenix. "Together with OpenAI, University of Phoenix has an opportunity to help working adults build practical AI capabilities they can immediately apply in their careers."

Scope of the collaboration

The partnership will explore AI applications across multiple dimensions:

  • AI-powered teaching experiences designed to deepen student engagement and improve outcomes
  • Expanded AI skills development integrated throughout academic programs
  • Tools to increase faculty productivity while enhancing personalized student support
  • AI-enabled career services to help learners identify skills gaps and navigate evolving career pathways
  • Administrative innovations to improve institutional efficiency
  • Workforce-aligned solutions for employers addressing AI capability needs

Kevin Mills, head of education go-to-market at OpenAI, said the collaboration would "expand access to ChatGPT Edu while helping foster the capabilities, culture and confidence needed to accelerate responsible AI adoption across the institution."

Research component

The partnership also includes a research dimension. Because University of Phoenix students apply new knowledge while actively employed, the collaboration creates opportunities to study how AI influences learning, workplace performance, and career advancement in real-world contexts. The university has previously conducted workforce research on career optimism, AI adoption, and employer readiness.

The details were first reported by University of Phoenix in a press release.
