University of Chicago Bans AI in Core Social Science Courses

The institution will require device-free classrooms and independent work as it pushes back against AI dependence in foundational undergraduate education.

The University of Chicago will prohibit artificial intelligence tools in its required social science core curriculum beginning fall 2026, marking one of the most comprehensive technology restrictions at a major research university.

The policy, detailed in a memo from the Social Sciences Collegiate Division, establishes what administrators call an "analog" learning environment for the three-course sequence that all undergraduates must complete. Students will be required to read assignments on paper, attend classes without laptops or phones, and complete all work independently without AI assistance.

The new restrictions

The policy encompasses several strict requirements. In-person attendance is mandatory, and recording of lectures or discussions is prohibited. Classrooms become device-free zones where laptops, cell phones, and wearable AI devices are generally banned. Students must complete assignments without artificial intelligence tools, though reasonable academic accommodations that don't compromise learning objectives will be permitted.

The memo, authored by SSCD Master Jenny Trinitapoli, states the approach reflects "a strong consensus" that the sequences work best as pedagogical settings without AI. The goal is to "equip students to read, write, and think without dependence on AI, just as we equip students to read, write, and think beyond the bounds of conventional views or leading ideologies."

Faculty retain some flexibility. Professors can allow targeted exceptions for specific purposes, such as examining datasets, troubleshooting code, or accessing library citation resources on particular days. The policy also permits "thoughtful experimentation" by instructors who want to incorporate AI into lessons, provided they consult with divisional leadership.

Why it matters

This represents a significant institutional stance on AI in higher education at a moment when most universities are still developing policies. Rather than focusing on detection or honor code enforcement, Chicago is restructuring the learning environment itself to prioritize foundational skills. The approach raises questions about whether elite institutions will increasingly separate basic skill-building from AI-enhanced advanced work—and whether such restrictions are practical or desirable across different disciplines and institution types.

Part of a broader pattern

The social science restriction follows a similar move by the university's law school, which announced in July that it would ban electronic devices in core first-year courses. That initiative, called Rethinking Legal Education in the AI Era, emerged from months of consultation with alumni, attorneys, faculty, and students. The law school framed its approach as helping students learn to think "with, without, and about AI."

The memo also specifies that AI-assisted grading has no place in the core unless faculty carefully assess its validity against human grading, and that all syllabi must be created by human scholars.

Whether other parts of Chicago's nine-area core curriculum will adopt similar restrictions remains unclear. The university has not indicated if other institutions are considering comparable policies.

The Chicago Maroon, the university's independent student newspaper, first reported the policy details after obtaining the division memo.
