UK Opens £20M Funding for Farm Robotics and Automation

The UK government has launched a £20 million funding competition for robotics and automated farming systems, targeting technologies ready to transition from development to practical field deployment. The initiative addresses persistent seasonal labor shortages while aiming to improve productivity across British agriculture.

The competition runs through the Farming Innovation Programme in partnership with Innovate UK, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. Agri-tech companies can apply to collaborate with researchers and farmers on systems designed for commercial agricultural use.

Defra highlighted existing projects as examples of supported technologies. Roboscientific's DETECT project uses breath analysis to identify bovine respiratory disease in dairy cattle before symptoms escalate. Fieldwork Robotics has developed a raspberry-harvesting robot and is using government funding to enhance the system's durability and reliability for commercial deployment.

Pathway to Commercial Deployment

"Farmers work incredibly hard to put food on our tables, often battling to find enough seasonal workers when the pressure is on," Farming Minister Stephen Morgan said in the announcement. "This funding will help put cutting-edge robots and technology into their hands, easing that burden while boosting yields and profits."

The program emphasizes moving technologies from early development toward practical farm use, particularly during periods when growers struggle to secure adequate seasonal workers. Applications opened August 3 through Innovate UK's Innovation Funding Service.

Chris Danks, head of agrifood at Innovate UK, noted the partnership approach: "We're supporting businesses, researchers and farmers to work together to develop technologies that address real-world challenges across agriculture. This competition will help accelerate innovations from concept to on-farm application, supporting solutions that can improve productivity, sustainability and resilience across the sector."

The Farming Innovation Programme forms part of a broader government commitment to invest at least £200 million in agricultural innovation by 2030.
