TSMC commits $100B more to Arizona chip fabs amid AI boom
The Taiwan chipmaker now plans $265 billion in U.S. investment as it races to meet surging demand for advanced semiconductors.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced it will invest an additional $100 billion in its Arizona operations, bringing the chipmaker's total planned U.S. investment to $265 billion as it works to capture what executives describe as a structural, multi-year surge in demand for AI processors.
The expansion will fund both front-end wafer fabrication plants and back-end advanced packaging facilities, CFO Wendell Huang said. TSMC also raised its 2025 capital expenditure forecast to between $60 billion and $64 billion.
"We're seeing this strong-structure, multi-year demand, and we do not plan to leave any food on the table for anybody else," Huang told CNBC, signaling the company's intent to dominate the AI chip manufacturing market.
Arizona buildout accelerates
TSMC's first Arizona fabrication plant is already operational and achieving yields that match its primary Taiwan facilities, according to details first reported by Reuters and CNBC. Equipment installation at a second fab is set to begin shortly, while a third fab is under construction. Groundwork has started on both a fourth fab and the site's first advanced packaging facility.
When complete, the Arizona campus is expected to house 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities plus a dedicated research and development center. Huang acknowledged challenges including construction worker shortages and infrastructure constraints, noting the company would collaborate with government officials to resolve them.
Technology roadmap and economics
TSMC is converting existing 5-nanometer production capacity to the more advanced 3-nanometer node to meet customer requirements. The company's 2-nanometer technology began generating revenue in the second quarter and is positioned as a key growth driver heading into Q3. Smaller transistor nodes allow more components per chip, delivering greater performance and efficiency.
Huang noted that U.S. fabrication costs run four to five times higher than in Taiwan, but argued the scale of investment would ultimately strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains. TSMC is simultaneously expanding at home, developing 13 leading-edge and advanced packaging fabs in Taiwan.

TSMC's massive Arizona commitment reflects the semiconductor industry's conviction that AI workload growth will sustain elevated chip demand for years, not quarters. Record financial performance
The Arizona announcement accompanied TSMC's second-quarter earnings, which showed net income of NT$706.56 billion—a 77.4% year-over-year increase and the company's fifth consecutive quarterly record. High-performance computing, the category encompassing AI chips, accounted for 66% of quarterly revenue. TSMC forecast third-quarter revenue between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.
Despite the record results, TSMC stock declined 7.3% following the announcement, though shares remain up roughly 48% year-to-date.
