The initiative comes as industry leaders debate whether rapid AI development poses existential risks that warrant regulatory intervention.

Trump framed the new entity as a mechanism to identify "bad actors" in AI while avoiding restrictions on the industry's growth. "We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. He compared the AI Force to Space Force, the military branch he created during his first term, and said it would operate through existing criminal justice channels.

Industry debate intensifies

The announcement follows weeks of public warnings from AI researchers and executives. Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI, said developers "earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." Anthropic employee Evan Hubinger estimated a greater than 10% chance of human extinction from unaligned AI within ten years.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei responded with an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," calling on competitors to adopt a "balanced rate" of development to allow time for safety standards.
