Stability AI Raises $76M From Music Labels and Gaming Giants

Universal, Warner, Sony Music and Electronic Arts join Series B round as company pivots to licensed creative AI models.

Stability AI has closed a $76 million Series B funding round backed by the three major record labels and Electronic Arts, marking a strategic shift for the company known for its open-source image generation technology.

The investment roster includes Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures, and Pacific Alliance Ventures. The funding follows separate licensing agreements Stability AI negotiated with UMG, WMG, and EA to develop AI models trained on their proprietary catalogs and intellectual property.

The round brings Stability AI's total capital raised to $232 million since Prem Akkaraju took over as CEO in 2024. Akkaraju inherited a company that had achieved widespread recognition in 2022 with Stable Diffusion, an open-source text-to-image model that became one of the most widely deployed generative AI tools.

Why it matters

The composition of this investor group signals a fundamental realignment in the AI-content industry relationship. Major entertainment companies that initially viewed generative AI as a copyright threat are now directly funding the technology's development—but only when their intellectual property is licensed rather than scraped. This represents a potential template for how AI companies can secure both capital and legal standing in creative industries.

From Open Source to Licensed Models

Stability AI's evolution reflects broader tensions in the generative AI space. The company built its reputation on open-source models that democratized access to AI tools, but faced legal and ethical questions about training data sources.

In May, the company released Stable Audio 3.0, its latest audio generation model explicitly built on licensed data. The timing coincides with ongoing industry debates over AI music generators that trained on copyrighted recordings without permission.

"This unmatched group of investors is an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician and storyteller," Akkaraju said in a statement. "Stability is unique in the AI field because we are creative people making tools for creatives."

Board Expansion and Returning Backers

The round included participation from individual investors Eric Schmidt and Sean Parker, both previous Stability AI backers. Parker also serves on the company's board. Returning institutional investors include Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, and Coatue.

Coatue co-founder Thomas Laffont will join Stability's board as part of the investment. "While others are building generalized AI, Stability AI is building creative tools, and doing it alongside the artists, studios, and rights holders whose work defines the field," Laffont said.

The funding round was first reported by Variety. The company has not disclosed its current valuation or specific terms of the licensing agreements with music labels and gaming companies.
