A team of former SpaceX engineers has opened an AI-driven steel fabrication facility in Cincinnati and closed one of Ohio's largest seed funding rounds to automate an industry still dominated by manual labor.
1872 announced Wednesday it secured $15 million in seed funding led by private funds advised from The O.H.I.O. Fund and launched operations at a renovated industrial facility in the Camp Washington neighborhood. The company is building what it calls an AI-native factory model to compress steel fabrication timelines from months to weeks while addressing acute skilled labor shortages.

The U.S. fabricated metal products market generates approximately $350 billion in annual demand, but the American Welding Society projects a shortage of 320,000 welders by 2030. The technology stack
1872's system combines three layers to manage the complete manufacturing cycle. A proprietary Factory OS platform handles material procurement, cost estimation, machine scheduling, and shop-floor logistics. Domain-specific AI agents trained to replicate the decision-making of welders, buyers, and logistics specialists operate within that system. Physical production relies on welding robotics from Columbus-based Path Robotics, which uses its Obsidian physical AI model for adaptive, real-time welding adjustments.
The integration aims to automate workflows that currently require extensive manual coordination across design, purchasing, scheduling, and production.
The facility and timeline
1872 is operating from the historic David Hummel Building Company facility on Spring Grove Avenue, constructed in 1903 by a stone masonry firm that built Cincinnati landmarks including City Hall and Union Terminal. Early automation systems are already deployed, with the company targeting full factory autonomy by 2027.
The Camp Washington site will serve as a validation prototype before 1872 scales its software platform and factory model into additional heavy manufacturing sectors.
Ohio's industrial AI corridor
The O.H.I.O. Fund reported deploying $219 million across 33 investments as of March 31, 2026, with total capital raised reaching $647 million. Mark Kvamme, CEO and chief investment officer at The O.H.I.O. Fund, characterized 1872 as representative of tech-first advanced manufacturing suited to Ohio's industrial base.
Co-founder and CEO Dan Summers cited the state's engineering talent pipeline from the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, Purdue University, and Carnegie Mellon University as a factor in the location decision.
1872 is targeting energy, utility, and industrial customers for its initial production capacity.
