Chipmaker accelerates construction of new fabs in Yongin, Cheongju and southwestern region as HBM demand surges through 2030.

SK hynix is deploying approximately $781 billion across South Korea to build manufacturing capacity for high-bandwidth memory and other AI chips, responding to projections that memory demand will grow 19% annually through the end of the decade.

The South Korean chipmaker is simultaneously expanding three major production sites while planning a fourth hub, according to a report first published by Asia Today and translated by UPI. The investments represent one of the semiconductor industry's largest domestic capacity buildouts as AI server deployments drive unprecedented memory requirements.

The scale of SK hynix's commitment—nearly three-quarters of a trillion dollars—signals how chipmakers are racing to secure manufacturing capacity years before demand materializes. With industry research firm Omdia forecasting sustained 19% annual growth in DRAM and NAND through 2030, and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won predicting memory shortages through the same period, the company is betting that AI infrastructure growth will absorb massive new production volumes.

Yongin becomes primary HBM production center

SK hynix plans to invest $407 billion in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster south of Seoul, building four fabrication plants in phases. The company's board approved $25 billion on Friday for the second phase through 2031.

Construction is underway on the first fab, designated Y1. The second facility, Y2, will break ground in July 2027 with its first cleanroom operational by June 2029. Yongin will serve as the primary manufacturing base for high-bandwidth memory and next-generation DRAM products used in AI servers.

Cheongju transitions from NAND to AI memory hub

The company is transforming its Cheongju site in central South Korea from a NAND flash center into a diversified AI memory production base with approximately $67.9 billion in planned investment.

SK hynix accelerated development of the M15X facility specifically to meet AI memory demand, positioning it as a new DRAM production base linked to nearby packaging and testing infrastructure. The company also began construction in April on P&T7, a dedicated advanced packaging facility for high-bandwidth memory that will receive $12.9 billion in investment.

The board recently approved another $12.9 billion for M17, a new NAND flash facility scheduled to begin construction in February 2027 with its first cleanroom opening in December 2028.

Southwestern hub adds fourth production pillar

Beyond Yongin and Cheongju, SK hynix is planning a $271 billion semiconductor cluster in southwestern South Korea, though the company has not finalized the location, configuration or construction timeline. The project reflects concerns that existing expansion plans may prove insufficient if AI service growth exceeds current projections.

The company's Icheon headquarters will retain its role as a research, development and manufacturing center, operating the M10, M14 and M16 fabs.

Chongqing facility under separate review

SK hynix confirmed it is reviewing options for its semiconductor packaging and testing plant in Chongqing, China, including a possible sale. A company official emphasized that the review is separate from the South Korean expansion and that no decision has been made. The Chongqing facility handles back-end manufacturing processes that prepare chips for final use.

The expansion strategy positions SK hynix to capture growing demand for memory in AI computing, where server deployments require both increased processing power and memory capacity. Details were first reported by Asia Today.
