Scalable Capital integrates ChatGPT, Claude for trading
German broker's 1 million clients can now execute trades and analyze portfolios through AI chatbots in a European banking first.
European broker breaks ground with AI chatbot trading
Scalable Capital has opened its investment platform to major AI chatbots, allowing its account holders to execute trades and analyze portfolios directly through ChatGPT and Claude. The German broker announced the integration on Tuesday, positioning itself as the first European bank to offer such functionality.
The service provides an alternative access method beyond Scalable's existing app and website, though the company has implemented multiple security measures for the AI-enabled trading channel. Founded in 2014, Scalable serves more than 1 million clients managing over €60 billion in assets across Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands.
Why it matters
This integration represents a significant test case for AI-driven financial services in regulated European markets. If successful, it could accelerate adoption of conversational interfaces for investment management and force traditional banks to respond. The move also highlights how fintech challengers continue to pressure established institutions by offering retail investors cheaper, more accessible alternatives to conventional banking relationships.
Cautious rollout before in-app integration
Scalable founder and Co-CEO Erik Podzuweit characterized the chatbot integration as a preliminary step before the company builds AI capabilities directly into its own application. He acknowledged that many customers may hesitate to grant ChatGPT access to their investment portfolios initially.
"A lot of people might still be hesitant to let ChatGPT look at their portfolio, manage their portfolio. So I think that it's a first step," Podzuweit told Reuters.
The executive suggested that AI-assisted investing could improve average returns for users, though he noted this hypothesis remains unproven and will require observation over time.
Competitive pressure in German banking
Scalable Capital exemplifies the wave of digital-first financial firms that have intensified competition in Germany's already crowded banking sector. These platforms have attracted retail investors by offering simpler interfaces and lower fees compared to traditional lenders, forcing established banks to modernize their digital offerings or risk losing market share to more agile competitors.
The integration of AI chatbots for portfolio management and trade execution extends this competitive dynamic into emerging technology territory, potentially creating another differentiator between legacy institutions and technology-forward challengers.
Details of the integration were first reported by Reuters correspondent Tom Sims.
