Rockwell Links AI Visual Inspection to Quality Records

New integration connects FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI with Plex QMS to embed AI-driven defect detection in quality management workflows.

Rockwell Automation has connected its AI-powered visual inspection platform with its quality management system, allowing manufacturers to route defect-detection results directly into quality records and traceability workflows.

The integration links FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI—an AI platform that analyzes camera feeds to identify manufacturing defects and anomalies—with Plex Quality Management System through an API. Inspection data captured by VisionAI can now be recorded within Plex QMS alongside other quality information, creating a unified record that supports product serialization and inspection history.

Why it matters

Manufacturers have deployed machine vision systems for years, but those tools often operate in isolation. By embedding AI inspection results into a quality management system, companies gain a continuous quality record that can inform root-cause analysis, regulatory compliance, and process improvement—not just flag defects in real time. The move reflects a broader shift from standalone inspection tools toward integrated quality workflows.

How the integration works

FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI uses AI models to detect defects and classify anomalies from visual data captured by new or existing camera systems on the factory floor. When integrated with Plex QMS, inspection outcomes flow into the quality management environment, where they can be linked to specific production runs, materials, and operators.

This connection allows manufacturers to maintain inspection history within the same system that tracks corrective actions, supplier quality, and compliance documentation. The result is a more complete quality record that spans both automated inspection and manual quality processes.

Expanding AI across manufacturing execution

Rockwell is embedding AI capabilities across its Plex software portfolio beyond visual inspection. Plex Connected Worker recently introduced an AI authoring agent that converts CAD files and technical documents into step-by-step digital work instructions for shop-floor employees. Plex Reporting and Analytics includes a natural-language AI agent that helps users query operational data and generate dashboards without writing code.

According to Rockwell's own research, 42 percent of manufacturing processes are expected to become AI-supported within the next year.

Part of a modular MES strategy

The Plex QMS integration aligns with Rockwell's elastic MES approach, introduced in December 2025, which emphasizes cloud-native, interoperable manufacturing execution capabilities. The company also recently launched FactoryTalk ResilientEdge, an architecture that connects Plex MES with edge execution, cloud analytics, and AI model training.

By linking VisionAI with Plex QMS, Rockwell is extending this modular strategy into quality management. Rather than treating AI inspection as a separate application, the integration positions it as a component of the broader quality workflow—one that contributes to traceability, analysis, and continuous improvement.

Details of the integration were first reported by ARC Advisory Group.
