Relatient Expands Voice AI to Automate Clinical Phone Requests

New capability routes nursing questions, prescription inquiries, and billing calls directly into EHR workflows without staff intervention.

Relatient has launched clinical request automation for its Dash Voice AI platform, extending the system's capabilities beyond appointment scheduling to handle the full spectrum of patient phone inquiries. The new feature went live today across the company's network of more than 50,000 healthcare providers.

The expansion addresses a significant operational gap: approximately 35 percent of all inbound calls to healthcare organizations involve clinical requests rather than scheduling needs. These calls typically include questions for nursing staff, medication and prescription inquiries, and billing questions—categories that have historically required manual handling and documentation.

How the System Works

The clinical request automation operates by converting voice conversations into structured tasks that feed directly into existing electronic health record systems. When a patient calls, the AI evaluates intent in real time by cross-referencing appointment history, EHR demographic data, and information disclosed during the conversation.

Once the call concludes, the system automatically generates a structured task complete with summary notes and routes it to the appropriate department or staff member based on custom organizational rules. Provider groups maintain full control over routing logic, directing specific request types to designated teams such as surgical coordinators, billing departments, or specialty triage nurses.

The process eliminates the need for staff to listen to voicemails, transcribe information, and manually create tasks in practice management systems.

Quantified Impact on Staffing

For practices managing more than 1,000 voicemails per week, Relatient estimates the automation returns over 300 staff hours weekly to direct patient care activities. That calculation reflects time previously spent on voicemail retrieval, transcription, and task creation.

"Dash Voice AI already autonomously handles thousands of scheduling-related calls for our clients without the need for human intervention, but scheduling only represents about half of patient inquiries," said Jeff Gartland, CEO of Relatient. "This new capability allows every nurse question, prescription request, and billing inquiry to transform into an actionable task the moment the call ends."

Relatient's platform currently manages 150 million appointments annually across its client base.

Why it matters

Healthcare organizations face persistent clinical staffing shortages while call volumes remain high. Automation that demonstrably reduces administrative burden addresses both operational efficiency and workforce retention. By eliminating manual voicemail processing, practices can reallocate hundreds of hours to patient-facing activities while reducing the administrative friction that contributes to staff burnout. The direct EHR integration ensures clinical requests don't fall through communication gaps—a common risk when tasks require manual transcription and routing.
