R1 to Acquire Humata Health for AI Prior Authorization Platform

R1, a healthcare revenue management company, has agreed to acquire Humata Health, an AI-driven prior authorization platform, in a transaction expected to close by the end of the third quarter. The acquisition will integrate Humata's technology into R1's Phare Operating System, expanding the platform's ability to automate pre-bill workflows and reduce claim denials.

Why it matters

Prior authorization ranks among the top three causes of claim denials and represents a significant administrative burden across the healthcare system. A recent KFF survey found that one-third of insured adults identify prior authorization as their biggest obstacle to accessing care, with the impact particularly acute for patients managing chronic conditions. Automating this process could materially reduce delays in patient care while cutting administrative costs for both providers and payers.

Addressing a Major Denial Driver

Prior authorizations require providers to obtain payer approval before delivering certain treatments or services. The process typically involves manual effort to track frequently changing payer policies and submit documentation that meets specific requirements. When authorizations are denied or delayed, patients face rescheduled appointments and providers experience revenue disruption.

Humata Health's platform uses what the company calls "agentic workflows" to match authorization policies and connect with payers in real-time. The system determines requirement logic, creates clinical documentation bundles, and manages requests through final approval. According to the company, its solution enables providers to achieve a 96% first-pass approval rate while reducing write-offs by 30%, rescheduled appointments by 83%, and staff touches by 45%.

Integration with Phare OS

R1's Phare Operating System focuses on pre-bill automation, using AI to prevent denials and optimize reimbursement before claims are submitted. The platform addresses authorization, utilization review, documentation, and coding workflows. Humata's authorization policy monitoring and autonomous submission capabilities will enhance Phare Intelligence and Payer Atlas, two foundational components of Phare OS.

The integration is designed to enable deeper collaboration between payers and providers, with the stated goal of moving the industry toward real-time authorizations. R1 partners with approximately 1,000 providers, including 95 of the top 100 U.S. health systems, and processes more than 600 million payer transactions annually.

Innovation Lab Expansion

Following the transaction close, Humata's team will join R1's R37 innovation lab, which focuses on agentic AI development. R1 plans to connect Humata's technology to Phare OS to accelerate automation across the revenue cycle while supporting Humata's ability to scale its operations.

"Humata significantly enhances our coverage of the authorization process, advancing our strategy to have the most intelligent and integrated pre-bill architecture in the industry," said Joe Flanagan, R1's Chief Executive Officer, in a statement.

Jeremy Friese, MD, Founder and CEO of Humata Health, emphasized the clinical impact: "As a physician, I've seen firsthand how prior authorization delays drain providers and push an already strained healthcare system to a breaking point."
