PTC Launches Onshape Labs for AI-Powered CAD Development

Early-access program embeds AI capabilities directly into cloud-native design workflows, with broader opt-in availability planned for summer 2026.

PTC has introduced Onshape Labs, an early-access initiative that embeds artificial intelligence capabilities directly into its cloud-native CAD and product data management platform. The program gives participating customers advance access to emerging AI-powered features before general release, with broader opt-in availability expected later this summer through the platform's preferences settings.

The initiative represents a shift from treating AI as an external tool to integrating it within the core systems where engineers design and define products. According to PTC, Onshape's cloud-native architecture captures every design decision in real time, creating structured data that enables AI to understand design intent and learn from previous work.

Why it matters

Most legacy CAD systems were built before cloud and AI architectures became standard, making it difficult to apply modern machine learning techniques to engineering workflows. By building AI capabilities into a platform that already operates in the cloud with real-time data capture, PTC is positioning Onshape to deliver automation and intelligence that legacy desktop systems cannot easily replicate. For engineering teams, this could mean faster iteration cycles and reduced manual validation work.

Initial capabilities in early access

The first features available through Onshape Labs include AI Quick Render, which generates high-quality product renderings from text prompts in seconds, and integration with NVIDIA Isaac Sim. The Isaac Sim workflow allows teams to transfer CAD assets into NVIDIA's robotics simulation framework using Omniverse Libraries, enabling simulation-ready visualization for robotics development.

Planned additions

PTC outlined several capabilities expected to join Onshape Labs soon. AI Agents and Automation will perform tasks and enforce design standards while working alongside engineers with full visibility and control. A Drawing Checker feature will use AI to validate that technical drawings conform to established standards. The FeatureScript MCP Server will provide text-to-code-to-CAD functionality, allowing engineers to create CAD geometry and customize the platform through natural language prompts.

"Engineering teams don't need more disconnected AI tools; they need AI that understands their products, their data, and how they actually work," said David Katzman, executive vice president and general manager of Onshape and Arena at PTC. The company's goal is to move from AI assisting engineers to AI actively participating in the engineering process.

Madison Huang, director of product marketing at NVIDIA, noted that integrating Omniverse libraries and capabilities into Onshape Labs places AI-powered agents inside the engineering workflow where teams can visualize, simulate, and improve products during the build process.

PTC retains discretion to refine, modify, discontinue, or generally release any Onshape Labs capability based on customer feedback and development priorities. The initiative aligns with PTC's broader vision for what it calls the Intelligent Product Lifecycle, which aims to help manufacturers build product data foundations and accelerate AI-driven transformation.

These details were first reported by PTC in a company announcement on July 14, 2026.
