Pentagon Deploys ChatGPT Mil and Grok for 3 Million Users

The Department of Defense has deployed military-specific versions of two leading consumer AI chatbots, expanding secure generative AI access across its workforce of 3 million civilian and military personnel.

ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now available through GenAI.mil, a centralized portal the Pentagon launched last year to provide commercial AI capabilities without routing sensitive government information through standard consumer platforms. The military versions are exempt from the data collection practices typical of consumer AI products.

The portal has already attracted substantial adoption, with more than 1.7 million unique users onboarded since launch, according to the Defense Department.

Two distinct AI tools for different missions

ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI's government program, will focus on document-intensive administrative work. The tool supports chat, file handling, projects, and custom GPTs, targeting routine unclassified tasks including logistics, planning, and policy development. Grok for Government, provided through SpaceX's Starshield AI secure satellite network, received a more expansive operational mandate from the Pentagon.
