OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work for Workplace Automation

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work on Thursday, an AI agent designed to automate workplace tasks by operating across different applications and file systems. The tool represents the company's most ambitious effort yet to capture the enterprise automation market.

Powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model, ChatGPT Work can pull context from various apps, files, and workflows to produce finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. The agent aims to reduce manual work by handling complex, multi-step tasks with limited human oversight.

OpenAI already offers Operator and deep research capabilities, which were consolidated into ChatGPT Agent for individual users, plus Workspace Agents for enterprise workflow automation. The new Work product extends these capabilities with broader application integration.

Anthropic, OpenAI's primary competitor, launched Claude Cowork earlier this year with plug-ins for legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis tasks. That announcement triggered notable stock declines among U.S. and European software and professional services companies, reflecting investor concerns about AI-driven industry disruption.

Microsoft, which backs OpenAI financially, followed with its own Copilot Cowork offering to strengthen its position in the agentic AI space.

Rollout and Additional Features

ChatGPT Work becomes available Thursday on web and mobile platforms, initially for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. Plus and Business tier users will gain access within days.

Alongside the agent, OpenAI announced a new desktop application and a hosted websites feature that enables users to build and publish websites directly through ChatGPT Work without external tools.

The timing coincides with OpenAI's preparations for a public offering, positioning the company to demonstrate commercial traction in enterprise markets ahead of increased scrutiny from public investors.
