Nvidia is pursuing a new wave of artificial intelligence infrastructure agreements potentially exceeding $750 billion in value, intensifying concerns that the company's investment strategy creates circular financing loops that distort the AI market.

The chipmaker disclosed a partnership with SK Hynix's parent company worth more than $500 billion late last week. Separately, Nvidia is negotiating to guarantee up to $250 billion for OpenAI to lease computing capacity from a U.S. data center project. The company is also discussing financing $350 billion of OpenAI's chip purchases for that same project, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

"While Nvidia's investments and partnerships reinforce confidence in long-term AI buildouts, investors remain concerned about circular financing," said Gary Tan, a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments. "Capital is increasingly being used to fund future AI customers and infrastructure deployments."

The risk extends beyond Nvidia. These interconnected deals create potential for distorted incentives across multiple industries, potentially leading to poor strategic decisions. If AI demand fails to meet elevated expectations, losses could cascade through the ecosystem.

Industry-wide pattern

Nvidia has taken stakes in AI developers including OpenAI and fellow chipmakers like Marvell Technology over the past two years, positioning itself throughout the AI value chain. The company isn't alone in this approach—Google agreed to backstop lease payments at five data center locations for Anthropic, effectively enabling a $35 billion loan for the AI startup.

These arrangements leave AI companies increasingly intertwined, creating vulnerability to systemic shocks. Rising debt levels compound the concern, as companies across the sector increase borrowing to fund data center construction and chip acquisitions.
