Technical restrictions built into commercial AI systems have also frustrated some users. "Open weight models, on the other hand, allow a broad community of researchers and developers to examine their behavior, identify vulnerabilities, develop safeguards, and improve them over time."

The debate has intensified as both Nvidia and Chinese laboratories have released open-source models in recent weeks, while regulatory pressure mounts following high-profile security incidents involving closed systems.
