Morningstar brings verified financial data to Google's enterprise AI

Morningstar has integrated its PitchBook research platform into Google Cloud's newly launched Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services, embedding independent investment analysis and private capital market intelligence directly into the AI system.

The integration allows Gemini Enterprise subscribers to access Morningstar's ratings, research, and PitchBook's private market data without leaving the platform. Users can query investment information, company data, and market activity while receiving source-attributed responses grounded in Morningstar's proprietary content.

Why it matters

AI adoption in financial services has been constrained by concerns about accuracy and source verification. By embedding a trusted third-party research provider directly into an enterprise AI platform, this partnership addresses a core barrier: the need for transparent, attributable information when making investment decisions. For wealth managers and retirement plan advisors, this could accelerate AI integration into daily workflows.

Technical implementation and capabilities

The connection uses Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard that enables uniform integration between AI systems and external data sources. The system is already operational for eligible subscribers.

Financial professionals can now access Morningstar's public market investment data and analysis alongside PitchBook's private market intelligence on companies, investors, funds, and transactions. The platform generates research with clear source attribution and allows users to ask specific questions about investments and market activity without switching between applications.

"We want to help investors access our insights more efficiently, while preserving transparency in the sources behind those answers," said Seth Sprinkle, Morningstar's global head of AI platforms strategy and partnerships.

Tom Van Buskirk, PitchBook's executive vice president of technology and engineering, emphasized the combination of AI tools and human insight. "Working with Google to bring that intelligence into Gemini Enterprise lets users ask harder questions and receive answers backed by intelligence from Morningstar and PitchBook," he said.

Addressing AI's credibility challenge

Sprinkle noted that while AI has transformed how financial professionals research markets, the technology's value depends entirely on the quality of underlying information. The integration aims to solve this by providing verified, institutional-grade data as the foundation for AI-generated insights.

Satish Thomas, vice president at Google Cloud, said access to trusted, domain-specific data could drive broader acceptance of AI in investment management. "We are enabling financial professionals to accelerate investment research and make decisions with confidence," he said.

The platform allows users to incorporate investment intelligence into AI-powered workflows and what the companies call "agentic experiences"—AI systems that can take action on behalf of users based on research and analysis.

Details of the integration were first reported by 401(k) Specialist.
