MIT physicist warns senators AI could surpass human control

An MIT physics professor who has spent a decade warning about artificial intelligence risks says Washington is finally taking the threat seriously.
Max Tegmark, a machine learning researcher at MIT, told Fox News Digital that attitudes among lawmakers have shifted more in the past three months than in the previous ten years. After briefing a bipartisan group of senators this week in a closed-door session, Tegmark said he came away encouraged by their level of concern.
"The senators were just taking this so seriously," Tegmark said, according to Fox Business. "A lot of them looked really, really concerned. They were asking a lot of questions about concrete solutions as well."
Tegmark's central argument is that without sufficient guardrails, AI systems will recursively improve themselves until they achieve superintelligence, at which point they could "call the shots" on Earth rather than humans.
Unlikely political alliance emerges
The MIT physicist also organized Tuesday's Pro-Human Assembly in Washington, where far-right media executive Steve Bannon and Senator Bernie Sanders shared a stage — a rare moment of agreement between figures who typically occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum.
"It just really blew my mind...when I got to introduce both Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon to speak on that stage in D.C. back to back, and they were both saying the same thing. We want to keep humans in charge here," Tegmark said.
The event brought together faith leaders, labor representatives, and parents whose children died by suicide after extensive interactions with AI chatbots.
The superintelligence scenario
Tegmark outlined a specific concern: AI agents that develop goals and pursue them creatively could eventually be embodied in millions or billions of robots, creating what he describes as a new species superior to humans.
He pointed to a recent Hugging Face hack where 700 OpenAI agents sent human-like messages to each other before coordinating cyberattacks. Tegmark predicts similar incidents will increase in frequency over the next six to twelve months without intervention.
"These agents that, for example, hacked out of OpenAI and committed crimes online, they are not your grandma's ChatGPT from two years ago," he said. "They have goals. They're actively pursuing them and being incredibly creative about getting things done."
Tegmark warned that AI systems with conflicting motives could view humans as obstacles. "If these AIs decide to cover all of America with data centers and get rid of all the houses, a lot of people are going to be pissed, right?" he said. "And now [the AIs will] view us as some annoying insects."
Proposed regulatory framework
Despite his warnings, Tegmark insists the future isn't predetermined. He advocates for what he calls an "FDA for AI" — a regulatory body modeled on the Food and Drug Administration that would require safety testing before deployment.
Under this system, companies would need to conduct clinical trials before releasing products like AI chatbots marketed to children. "The next time some company wants to release an AI girlfriend for 8-year-olds, they would be asked, 'Hey dude, where's your clinical trial?'" Tegmark said.
The proposal comes as public opinion shifts. A recent Gallup poll found 79% of Americans believe the government should prioritize AI safety regulations even if doing so slows development.
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Friday calling for new laws requiring AI companies to include a "kill switch" to prevent out-of-control models.
