Microsoft Deploys 3M Optical Tech in Azure Data Centers

Microsoft has selected 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) connector technology for deployment across its Azure data center infrastructure, marking the first announced adoption of the technology by a hyperscale cloud provider. The partnership, announced by both companies, also includes 3M's use of Microsoft AI platforms to modernize its internal business operations.

Addressing data center deployment speed

According to the announcement first reported by 3M, the company's EBO technology uses an expanded beam optical interface that eliminates direct contact requirements.

3M has been scaling production of EBO technology to meet demand from hyperscalers and data center operators. The company helped establish an EBO Multi-Source Agreement to support industry standardization and broader adoption of the technology.
Enterprise AI deployment at 3M
The partnership extends beyond infrastructure. 3M will deploy Microsoft AI and digital capabilities across customer service, finance, sales and marketing functions as part of its enterprise transformation strategy.
One specific implementation involves Microsoft Frontier Company engineers working with 3M's Global Business Services team to automate customer order management. The companies are developing an AI agent-driven workflow to handle credit checks, delinquency assessments and system updates with human oversight controls and a custom monitoring dashboard for real-time visibility.
This solution is expected to reduce manual effort, improve process speed and consistency, and accelerate cash flow while freeing staff for higher-value work.
Jon Van Wyck, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at 3M, described AI as a tool to accelerate growth and improve customer experiences while supporting the infrastructure needed to power AI's future.
Both companies indicated they intend to continue technical collaboration between engineering and commercial teams, with focus areas including reliability, deployment speed, density and long-term scalability across Microsoft's data center and device ecosystem.
