Microsoft is transforming its Copilot platform from a conversational assistant into systems that independently plan and execute complex business workflows. Microsoft introduced two research capabilities that leverage multiple AI models simultaneously. Critique orchestrates different models—both Microsoft's own and third-party systems—to evaluate complex research tasks including competitive intelligence, market analysis, scientific literature reviews, and enterprise strategy documents. One model reviews and challenges another's response before returning results.

Council takes a different approach by routing identical prompts to several models and presenting their responses side by side. This allows users to compare where models agree or disagree and select the most appropriate answer for their needs.

Legal Agent brings specialized workflows to Word

Microsoft released Legal Agent as an industry-specific Copilot capability embedded directly in Word. The tool assists legal professionals throughout document lifecycles by drafting contracts from templates or natural-language instructions, reviewing agreements for unusual clauses or missing provisions, comparing document versions, and summarizing lengthy contracts.

Legal Agent can extract key terms such as renewal dates, payment obligations, and termination provisions while generating executive summaries for non-legal stakeholders. Because it operates within Word's native environment, attorneys interact through natural-language prompts while continuing standard document editing.

Microsoft emphasizes that Legal Agent assists rather than replaces attorneys—users must review and approve all AI-generated work.
