Meta's Muse Image Lets Users Generate AI Content From Instagram Photos

The feature has drawn privacy criticism, but public account holders can disable their content from being used.

Meta has launched Muse Image, a feature that enables users to create AI-generated content using publicly posted Instagram photos — including images that belong to other people.

The tool allows anyone to reference an Instagram username and generate video content using that person's likeness, raising immediate concerns among privacy advocates and technology observers.

Privacy concerns over consent and notification

Technology journalist and author Taylor Lorenz highlighted the core issue with the new feature: users can have their public Instagram content used to create AI-generated videos without receiving any notification or providing explicit consent.

"It's allowing anybody to just tag someone's Instagram user name and create a video using their likeness without their consent and without any sort of notification," Lorenz said.

The feature operates by default for all public Instagram accounts, meaning users must take active steps to prevent their content from being used in this way.

Why it matters

Muse Image represents a significant expansion of how AI systems can leverage user-generated content on social platforms. The opt-out default puts the burden on users to protect their own images rather than requiring explicit permission before their likeness can be used in AI-generated content. This approach could set precedent for how other platforms handle similar AI features, making it a critical moment for digital privacy standards.

How to opt out of Muse Image

Instagram users with public accounts can disable their content from being used in Muse Image through the app's settings:

  1. Navigate to your profile in the Instagram app
  2. Tap the three-line menu icon in the top right corner
  3. Scroll to "Sharing and reuse" and select it
  4. Find "Allow people to create with and reuse your original audio on Meta AI"
  5. Toggle the setting to "Off"

The opt-out process is currently the only way for users to prevent their public Instagram content from being incorporated into AI-generated videos created by others through Muse Image.
